When Jax, a robust twelve-year-old Aussie Mix went in for her dental cleaning, a massive growth was discovered attached to a kidney. The family was surprised. Surgery would be expensive, but there was time to consider options and, perhaps, a second opinion.
At Windsor Oaks Veterinary Clinic, Doctor Pam Whiting was exceptionally gracious with her time and advice. After viewing the sonogram, she concluded that the original diagnosis was probably correct and treatment would be expensive and risky. But, she said, an option to consider would be the UC Davis veterinary school clinic. “I know the former chief of internal medicine.” She would make arrangements.
Sadly, a couple of days later, prior to surgery being scheduled, but after a glorious day hiking in California’s coastal redwoods with family, Jax stumbled hopping into the car, irreparably damaging her tender kidney. Within eighteen hours, she was gone.
Still, Dr. Whiting’s care and compassion for the old pup, as demonstrated by the time she expended explaining options to the owners, separated her from those who must examine pets, diagnose and explain in the short timeframes allotted in many clinics.
